If you are thinking about learning Cisco networking, one option is to get practice on real Cisco routers and switches. Another option is to use an Emulator or simulator which allows you to run Cisco IOS on your own computer (Emulator) or mimic the CLI (Simulator). Disadvantages of Using GNS3:

• GNS3 is a popular emulator that runs the Cisco IOS software, but you can only emulate routers not switches.
• You can download GNS3 for free from but you’ll have to supply the IOS image yourself.
• Cisco owns the copyright on IOS so it can’t be shared freely.

• It adds only 16 switch ports to your virtual router and supports only basic switching features.
• Purchasing the Learning Labs costs a little bit of money, but it’s not unreasonable.
• It requires many resources (CPU, Memory etc.). If you don’t choose appropriate IDLE PC settings then your computer CPU will rise up to100% within a minute.
• By default, you will not get Switch IOS in GNS3 and for other routers you have to download IOS.
• The configurations will not be saved into startup even if you type ‘write memory’ or ‘copy run startup. You can save into a text file or you can use as a project.

Disadvantages of Using Packet Tracer:

• Cisco also has a simulator called Packet tracer, but it’s a simulator so it mimics the commands and output of Cisco IOS.
• It is only supported everything that is CCNA related, but if you want to try something else, it’s possible that the command is not included.
• Packet tracer is not available to the public; it can only be downloaded if you are a member of the Cisco Networking Academy.
• You will see very limited commands supported by Packet Tracer
• Packet Tracer doesn’t support iBGP yet now
• If you configure OSPF using Packet Tracer you may experience some troubles with LSU update.
• It does accept “Etherchannel” on the layers of the Switches.
• It affects the ‘STP’ port very frequently that it leads to loops.

If you are new to (Cisco) networking then it is highly recommended to practice in real hardware and familiar not only with the Cisco CLI but also with the hardware. If you are on a budget, then Packet tracer and GNS3 are good options, but it gets harder in future companies and also it is very difficult to pass the certification exam.
