Evolution of Computers
We are all familiar with the evolution of computers. From the first computer ENIAC using vacuum tubes to the current version of the personal computers. Throughout the last decade, we have been able to decrease the physical size of the computers and increase the performance of the computers as well. From being able to do a single task in hours to billions and trillions of tasks per second. We have created very powerful systems throughout the decade but what has remained the same is the intelligence of the systems or should i say that the personal computer is still dumb. Even though the computers are powerful, it is only capable of doing tasks which are assigned to it by the user.
This ‘dumb’ aspect of our machines has baffled programmers around the world. This has made people like Marvin Minsky, Yann LeCun, John McCarthy to come up with different approaches to make intelligent systems. Marvin Minsky created the first neural network machine. Yann LeCun is known as the father of Convolutional Neural Networks for his contributions towards the development of CNN. John McCarthy is known as the father of Artificial Intelligence for his work and devotion for the development of intelligent machines.
Current Scenario and Future Machine
In today’s world, intelligent machines and intelligent programs can be found in most aspects of our life. Gmail’s smart compose, Google Photos’ face recognition, Apple’s Face ID technology, Smarter AI Camera, Weather Forecasting and Disaster Prediction are applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Today we are able to fit intelligent machines in very small form factors like that of a smartphone and anyone is able to learn machine learning and data science. All of these resources were previously not available for everyone.
Surely, machines have not become intelligent to the extent they can automate everything in our daily lives but we are on the right path to building one. Scientists are working on building quantum computers, advanced Artificial Intelligence, robotic limbs for the future. In the coming years, machine learning and artificial intelligence will be crucial for the advancement of the human race as it helps mankind to think out scenarios which would not have been previously possible.
